Suriname School Project

This is the school project we did in Suriname. We installed this water storage and filtration system in a school of 860 students. They didn't have any of their 3 bathrooms working so we went in and installed this system and repaired or replaced all of the toilets for them. The students (especially the little girls) were thrilled to have working toilets.

What are these?

This is Ricky. He is 14 years old and is a dropout from school. He sells us shrimp every week. Look how huge these shrimp are. We pay about $4 a pound for them and have them about twice a month. Yummy!! Ricky is a good salesman but I have to get after him because he comes around too much to sell us his shrimp.

Enjoying the island

Here we are on St. Lucia. We had a few hours before our next appointment so our friends took us to this beautiful bay. It's nice to get away from Guyana once in a while and see such beauty as this.

Oops!!

We were in the jungle in St. Lucia one day. Sister Whitehead was trying to cross this little stream and didn't make it. She fell backward and landed in the water. Good thing it was clean and warm. We laughed.

St. Vincent (that's me).

Here is a picture of St. Vincent. We were there for a few days looking at several projects. Isn't the water and sunset beautiful. St. Vincent isn't as commercialized as St. Lucia is. They don't have the resorts, money and cruise ships like St. Lucia has but it is very beautiful anyway.

The Grand Pitons

These are the Pitons (pronounced like the Tetons). They are in St. Lucia on the far end of the island. St. Lucia is very beautiful but very expensive to live or visit there. We are going to do some Humanitarian work there with the poor.

This is another picture of the Pitons. Aren't they beautiful. It takes 3 hours of hard climbing to get to the top. We didn't do it.

Can you believe this?

Sister Whitehead playing in the mud. Not really. We were visiting some chicken farms down this lonely muddy road and we had to wear long boots to get out of the mud. She got bit several times on her legs by Chiggers. These bites won't heal for several weeks and even months. They itch you to death. I have some on my legs that are 3 months old that still haven't healed.

Home sweet home

We were walking down the road that shows Sister Whitehead with her boots on. We came across this little house with all of these kids. They are so poor. They don't have a father and the mother leaves them to go to work every day. Sad! Sad!

Happy orphans

We gave this swing set to an orphanage about 2 hours from where we live. There are between 30-40 orphans at any one time there. They didn't have any play equipment and only watched TV. We also gave kitchen supplies and a lot of clothing to them. We enjoyed this project. This picture shows just a few of the smiling kids.

Rice Crispies?

Someday maybe! These farmers are throwing rice in the field (rice fields have water in them for quite a while) to plant rice. There were about 15 men planting but I only showed 2 of them.

Animials and more animals

I've mentioned animals on the road but never showed you a picture. This large sow is taking her time crossing the busiest road in Guyana with her piglets hanging on and having lunch at the same time. Traffic was stopped in both directions while lunch was being served.

Look at the missionaries

This shows all of the missionaries in our zone and our Mission President and his wife. We are at our zone conference. We have two zones in Guyana and this is the zone we belong to. We have a group of wonderful young men here. They are hard working and very spiritual.

Yes we have some bananas

This is our back yard. We just cut this bunch of bananas from the tree in the background. Whenever you harvest bananas, you have to cut the tree down because it only grows one crop. New trees grow rapidly for the next crop in a year or so.

Big critter

This is a giant lizard (about 4 ft. long) we saw while we were walking in the jungle of Trinidad. He was enjoying the sun.
